Jack Pop’s Circus of Science – Halloween Spezial

In the organizer's words:

If you look at Halloween through a nerd’s lens, you’ll find spooky facts and horror phenomena even in science. How can you create blood effects using infrared radiation? How does ultrasound carry ghostly sounds? And what chemical trick makes magical fireballs shoot through the air?

All will be revealed on October 21, when Leipzig’s Powernerd Jack Pop presents the second Halloween special edition of “Circus ofScience” at the Kupfersaal— featuring hands-on, interactive spooky science!

You’re also cordially invited to help set the spooky mood: Anyone who comes to the event in costume will receive a free serving of pumpkin spice popcorn as a reward. 🍿

Three guest experts will share their “terribly” good insights, offering a glimpse into their fields of expertise through short keynote talks:

⚰️ Mirko Gutjahr (archaeologist & historian, Scientific Director of the Luther Museums in Eisleben & Mansfeld) will explore the myths and facts surrounding European vampire graves, where the deceased were impaled, beheaded, or nailed down to prevent their return to the world of the living.

👹 Katrin Stupp ( medieval expert & podcaster) takes a closer look at the “Devil’s Bible,” the largest surviving manuscript from the Middle Ages, which, according to legend, was created through a pact with the devil.

🧹 Julia Jeschke ( legal scholar) examines modern witch hunts, which are alarmingly prevalent in many parts of the world.

🎵 Musical accompaniment is provided by singer Richard Tautenhahn and guitaristAndré Gorjatschow, who—as the “world’s smallest show band”—not only perform Halloween hits like the “Ghostbusters” song but, accompanied by saxophonist Lukas Merten, will also be performing classical music this time.

Doors open: 7:00 p.m. (lobby activities + hands-on experiments)

Start: 8:00 p.m.
