2021 marks the 30th anniversary of the death of the acclaimed chansonnier, songwriter, actor and filmmaker Serge Gainsbourg. As an incorrigible provocateur, the greatest enfant terrible of the French post-war era and a cult icon, he does not fit into any creative pigeonhole and, even after numerous biographies and documentaries about his life and work, remains what he always was: a mystery that leaves no one cold. The title of this approach to the spectacular life of Serge Gainsbourg is his scandalous song "Je t'aime ... moi non plus", which is still popular today and which - originally written and recorded for Brigitte Bardot - brought him worldwide fame in the erotically charged recording with his later partner, the British actress Jane Birkin.

With "Je t'aime ... - The Spectacular Life of Serge Gainsbourg", Dominique Horwitz, Berthold Warnecke and a four-piece live band now embark on an exciting search for traces of the brilliant artist and the man Gainsbourg, who wavered between self-doubt and vision and whose death in 1991 was mourned by an entire nation. Horwitz slips into Gainsbourg's brash alter ego "Gainsbarre", touches on the stages in the life of the star, who grew up in France as the son of Jewish immigrants, and traces the eventful career of one of the most important singer/songwriters of the 20th century in snapshots.
