The play“Kaspar Häuser Meer”
by Felicia Zeller tellsthe tragicomic storyof the daily work lives of three social workers—Anika, Barbara, and Silvia—at a youth welfare office. They care for children and families in difficult life situations and bear a great deal of responsibility in doing so.
When their colleague Björn is sidelined due to burnout, the three must take on numerous additional cases on top of their own responsibilities. Amid phone calls, mountains of paperwork, meetings, and a constant stream of new problems, they try to keep track of everything and make the right decisions to protect the children.
The play addresses very serious issues such asneglect, violence, child endangerment, and the strain on the social welfare system. At the same time, however, the play is also surprisingly funny. The three women speak quickly, interrupt one another, lose their train of thought, or find themselves in absurd situations. This repeatedly creates momentsthat make the audience laugh.
It is precisely this contrast that makes the playtragicomic: You laugh at the hectic and sometimes absurd situations, even though they are underpinned by very serious and distressing circumstances. Laughter and tragedy are therefore often very close together.
Felicia Zeller thus not only highlights the difficult work at the youth welfare office but also shows how the three women try to cope with the enormous pressure. Humor becomes a way for them to endure the overwhelming demands at all.
“Kaspar Häuser Meer” is thus a tragicomic play that makes you laugh, but at the same time gives you pause for thought and reveals the limitations of an overburdened social system.
