At the invitation of the Museum of Asian Art, artist Kimsooja has developed a sequence of collection interventions together with guest curator Keumhwa Kim . The exhibition is the prelude to a series of new exhibition projects that mark the Humboldt Forum as a site of contemporary artistic and social debates.
It presents 14 works and groups of works by the Korean-born, internationally exhibiting artist, which unfold in media diversity in the exhibitions of the Museum of Asian Art and the Ethnological Museum at the Humboldt Forum.
Older works and new ones created especially for the exhibition connect associatively with the historical objects in the museums' galleries, stimulate dialogues, and place collections and their themes in a relationship to the present.
Already in the outdoor space in front of the Humboldt Forum, a shipping container painted in the color scheme of Korean obangsaek (primary colors, black and white) refers to the presentations on the 3rd floor of the Humboldt Forum. Bottari 1999 - 2019 simultaneously represents working methods of the conceptual artist: from everyday objects she derives works of art (deductive objects) that reflect her own experience as much as they relate to various places and occasions.
Bottari, sculptural objects made of richly colored textiles form a characteristic motif of Kimsooja, are both material and metaphor. They stand for protective reception as well as for unfolding and offering. In cooperation with the Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen, a new group of works in porcelain derived from Bottari was created especially for the exhibition. Inspired by the aesthetics of so-called moon jars, Korean storage vessels from the 18th century, the artist adapted historical technologies translated by the Meissen ceramists. Kimsooja's work addresses the universal themes of home, migration, and mobility. On a formal level, her works are also tangential to issues of transcendence and repetitive action as a meditative practice.
Rooted in Korean traditions and working with media of diverse nature, Kimsooja's installations, performances, sculptures, films, and photographs combine personal history with global issues. With a minimum of interventions and restrained actions, which she describes as "art of not making," she seeks to reveal the hidden, to make the immaterial and ephemeral tangible. By appropriating things and patterns of action, she links spaces, times, and cultural practices. Her artworks make interconnections visible in the two museums and offer themselves as a resonating space. With her work, the artist not least questions the hierarchization of the transfer of knowledge from West to East and the dichotomy between art and everyday life.
Events: A conversation between Kimsooja and curator Keumhwa Kim will take place on Oct. 25, 2023, at 5 p.m. in Room 306.
Publication: An accompanying booklet with descriptions of the works as well as an interview with the artist will be published approximately three weeks after the opening of the exhibition.
