In the organizer's words:

Decolonial Material Performance Featuring Corn, Popcorn, and Monsanto
German and Spanish with German surtitles

The KMZ Collective explores colonial legacies, looted art, food, and ecology through art and activism. In “ZEA MAYS,” the group—known for its decolonial material theater—takes a closer look at a grain often associated with movie theater snacks and yellow cobs. As the world’s number-one grain crop, corn is playing an increasingly important role. Originally from Mexico, this “miracle grain” is primarily used as animal feed and in biogas plants, but it is also found in many products of our daily lives: in food, disposable tableware, packaging materials, T-shirts, and fuel tanks. The four performers trace the journey of this astonishingly versatile plant from the Mayan creation myth through its global spread since colonization and the Monsanto/Bayer genetically modified corn scandal, all the way to its reintroduction using indigenous farming methods on Berlin’s soil and stages. With live sound, cameras, and popcorn machines, “ZEA MAYS” sheds light on global food chains and calls for ecological thinking: Eat local, act global!

Note: A “Taco Talk” will take place on Sunday, October 25, at 12:00 PM. Here you can eat tacos and talk with the KMZ Collective about their art (Registration required! Tickets also available at rausgegangen.de).
