For years, the World Council of Churches and the Laudato Si’ Movement—with the active participation of Catholic dioceses,
religious orders, and church-affiliated financial institutions, have been coordinating declarations on church divestment worldwide to promote more ethically and sustainably oriented investments by churches. Just last year, 46 church-
institutions in Germany jointly announced their fossil fuel divestment, organized by Christians for Future with the
support from the Christian Initiative for Climate Justice.
This was the largest declaration of its kind in Germany to date and received widespread positive media coverage.

The urgency of ethically sustainable investing is underscored not least by the ongoing climate crisis and the sharp
rises in fossil fuel prices due to the wars in Ukraine and Iran. One might even ask whether the Church’s ethical commitment does not call for a
require a decision to exclude certain investments.
