Reading & Discussion with GABRIELE TREIGE

A Sunday in May, quiet and full of promise. Soft light streams into the courtyard; everything seems to be proceeding as usual. As she does every morning, the first-person narrator glances at her mother’s window across the way—a silent ritual to reassure herself that everything is all right. But on this day, the window remains closed.
What begins as a fleeting sense of unease grows, over the course of the hours, into a gnawing anxiety. Thoughts circle, memories intrude, and old wounds and unspoken conflicts come to the surface. The relationship between mother and daughter—always characterized by both closeness and distance—begins to realign itself.
While life outside seems to go on undisturbed, everything inside the narrator begins to falter. What if there is more hidden behind the closed window than mere absence? And what if this day irrevocably changes something?
*The Window* is a novel about perception and projection, about family ties that never find peace, and the fear of the irrevocable end of the familiar.

Gabriele Treige, born in Berlin in 1954; studied German language and literature and philosophy; works as a freelancer; has published in anthologies and written for radio; her novel *Die Übermacht des Üblichen* was published by MartaPress in 2020. Lives in Berlin.
