No musician embodies the versatility and innovative spirit that define jazz quite like Miles Davis (1926–1991). As early as the late 1940s, he was a co-founder of bebop, ushered in the cool jazz of the 1950s, further developed hard bop, and, with *Kind of Blue* (1959), created the style-defining masterpiece of modal jazz. Starting in the late 1960s, Davis opened jazz up to rock, funk, and electronic sounds, thus becoming a pioneer of fusion jazz.

Through his constant stylistic innovation, he not only transformed jazz on multiple occasions but also inspired generations of musicians far beyond the genre.

Leipzig-based bandleader Rüdiger Krause, who was able to experience two of Miles Davis’s final concerts in Germany in 1990 and 1991 and played in the Dresden funk jazz band Code M.D., is a profound connoisseur of the Miles Davis sound and, with his well-rehearsed quartet, is able to shift seemingly effortlessly between styles without falling into clichés. Trumpeter Frank Bartsch knows how to bring to life everything from bebop to the cinematic masterpiece *Elevator to the Gallows* and funk jazz hits like *Tutu*.
