Ludwig I (1786-1868) shaped Munich like no other king. He was a patron of the arts, a philhellene and at the same time a "Teutonic" patriot, but his private life was long reduced to his wives' tales. Historian Marita Krauss, author of the acclaimed 2020 biography of Lola Montez, has analyzed King Ludwig I's diaries and dream book. Her brilliantly written biography shows Ludwig I as a highly emotional person who was enthusiastic and capable of enthusiasm, a passionate romantic and at the same time a brilliant visionary.
