Who in Berlin commemorates the beginning and / or the end of the airlift every year? The flights of the "raisin bombers" provided one of the founding myths of the Federal Republic of Germany. Before everything freezes in ritual or sinks into oblivion, it's time to ask: What was life like in Berlin in those days? Why did the BVG reopen its streetcar line between Friedrichshain (East) and Kreuzberg (West) via the Oberbaum Bridge? Where could I see the premiere of the DEFA film "1 2 3 Corona" in the West sectors? Did the planes fly back empty? Why did SG Oberschöneweide, later FC Union (Soviet sector), play in Berlin's Olympic Stadium (British sector) during the blockade? And what about money in the days when there was one city with four sectors but not yet two Germanys? Or why did the Tagesspiegel show 42 men, many children but no women in eight photos in a special edition on the 70th anniversary of the airlift, even though there was a large surplus of women in Berlin in 1948?
The example of the "Airlift", which is presented with numerous materials from the time, raises the quintessential question: What does our culture of remembrance look like? What is your attitude here?
