LUISE WEIDEHAAS

“I choose words that appeal to me to describe situations that move me,
landscapes, recall encounters, and bring it all into melodic harmony,” says Weidehaas, in keeping with the motto “Melody is king.”

Born in Meissen, surrounded by her parents’ record collection—Cat Stevens, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd. Her grandmother was a piano teacher who sang opera. She studied musicology, philosophy, and German language and literature in Düsseldorf until she began her doctoral dissertation on political songs in the GDR. Long before Luise Weidehaas picked up the guitar, she sang in school and university choirs and various band projects. She borrowed the stage name Weidehaas from her mother, for whom it is her maiden name. Her musical inspirations include Sigur Rós, Sufjan Stevens, Kat Frankie, and Bon Iver. Inspired by extended stays in Canada and England, she independently released her “remarkable” (DLF) EP *Swell* in 2015.

In the spring of 2020, her debut album *Shore* followed on her own label, Point Reyes, and was named “one of the best German-language song albums of the year” [2020] on the Deutschlandfunk Kultur program *Tonart*. Her voice is described as having “English lightness” (Westzeit), and her phrasing is said to have “Celtic origins” (WDR 4). She has been compared to Suzanne Vega (Folker), Sandy Danny (WDR 4), and Mazzy Star (guitar & bass) and described as “a sort of mini-Joni Mitchell in German” (SR 2 KulturRadio).
