Martin Puttke: Geradeaus auf verschlungenen Wegen
In the organizer's words:
A report on an unsuspecting traveler’s fascinating journey through art, education, and politics.
Summer 1961: Eighteen-year-old Martin Puttke cycles through the Brandenburg Gate—he hails from the Ruhr region, and his dream is to become a ballet dancer. The only state-run ballet school was in East Berlin. He held onto that spirit of adventure and became a dancer at the State Opera; he studied dance education in Moscow and went on to become first the artistic director and then the long-time director of the Berlin Ballet School, which, under his leadership and using his methodology, became a world-leading training institution. From then on, the consensus was: a ballet education in Berlin was the ultimate.
Martin Puttke’s memoirs are more than just an artist’s biography. Through his fascinating experiences, readers gain an informative and entertaining insight into the two social systems in East and West—a historical document on life, education, and cultural work in a divided Germany.
In this reading, Puttke looks back—without nostalgia, but with clarity and passion—on a time when art was always political as well.
In the discussion that follows, we look forward to hearing Martin Puttke’s perspective on the cultural scene today. Together with him and other guests from the worlds of culture and politics, we will explore the role of the body in today’s society and draw connections to the social and political dimensions of art and dance.
