On September 6, 2026, Leipzig will become a gathering place for everyone committed to protecting the oceans: For the first time, the Captain Paul Watson Foundation Germany invites you to “Leipzig Marine Conservation Day” at the idyllic Philippus grounds on the Karl-Heine Canal. Set against a backdrop of water, culture, and urban life, this day of action for young and old alike will educate, inspire, and bring people together—right in the heart of Saxony, yet very close to the sea.
From exciting lectures and interactive workshops for children to exhibitions, readings, and information booths, visitors can expect a diverse program for the whole family. The goal of the event is to draw attention to the critical situation facing the world’s oceans while also highlighting concrete ways to get involved.
Numerous dedicated initiatives and organizations will be participating, including:
- ElasmOcean
- GRD Dolphin Protection
- Surfrider Foundation (unfortunately unable to attend due to illness)
- Saxony State Diving Association e.V. + Just Leave Bubbles Diving School
- Artist Ulrike “Typocean”
- Underwater Opera e.V.
- Environmental Education Center e.V.
- ARIWA Leipzig
- Isabell Hentschel from GEOMAR Kiel
- Water Exhibition by the Heinrich Böll Foundation
The program is complemented by the impressive works of underwater photographer Volker Klostermann and readings/lectures by authors Florian Sturm, Ramon Gerwien, and Malina Güthner.
There’s a special program for children featuring a children’s reading, arts-and-crafts activities, workshops, VR headsets for a dive in the Kulki, a microscope for observing algae, and much more!
Ocean Conservation Day is not just an informational event, but a platform for exchange, networking, and collective action. After all, protecting the oceans doesn’t begin at the coast—it begins wherever people take responsibility. Leipzig is thus sending a strong message in support of marine conservation and demonstrating that change can happen even far from the sea.
Come on by! Bring your friends! Marine conservation concerns us all! Save the Ocean!

Vegan food and drinks will be available for purchase on-site! You can also try the new vegan energy bars from Pure Ocean!
