Reality as Reflected in Perception
Albert Gehret and Mike van der Gracht present photographic and photo-media works that reveal human beings in various ways.
Mike van der Gracht photographs people face-to-face. For him, portrait photography is an integrative process in which social, biological, psychological, and spiritual aspects merge. He sees his work as the art of capturing the right moment, in the right place, from the right perspective, in the right fraction of a second, in order to reveal the beauty inherent in every human being.
Albert Gehret works in the field of photomedia. His works question the supposed unambiguity of photographic reality: in his work, people appear not only as figures, but also as traces, movements, interventions, or temporal condensations. This reveals that an image not only shows what was in front of the camera, but also how we interpret and organize reality. Between portrait and trace, counterpart and echo, a dialogue emerges about human presence in the image—and about the extent to which the visible is shaped by perception.
The opening remarks will be delivered by Prof. Dr. Irene Daum, a psychologist, neuroscientist, and art journalist. Her work focuses on perception, memory, and creativity, as well as the connections between science and art.
