"There is no activity that is a waste of time per se," writes Michaela Krützen. "Every era, every class and every culture works on what it considers to be wasted time." Waste of time is the name of Krützen's study, in which she unfurls a "round dance" of characters in film and literature. These include Marie Antoinette (in Sofia Coppola's film), Patrick Bateman(American Psycho), Jeff Lebowski(The Big Lebowski) and Betty Draper(Mad Men). Krützen has collected a total of ten examples and set them in relation to texts from sociology and philosophy. The relationship between work and idleness as well as the significance of status and money not only provide information about what is considered a waste of time, but also about the world in which these figures live. Salon host Matthias Vogel talks to Michaela Krützen about outsiders and avoiders.
The KoKi at the Künstlerhaus will be showing films on the subject from September 24 to October 4.
