The year 1990 is the core of the new narrative of GDR history by the Berlin research collective Vajswerk.
2025 is an anniversary year, many will speak. Everyone knows, somehow, some will cultivate their heritage, others will show their wounds, Sunday speeches will be made; most will remain silent, not even realizing that our (all-German) present began 35 years ago. The documentary play is certainly aimed at those who were there at the time, but above all at the people who were too young for it, who are as young as the characters:
Four people are on stage, they come from four cities in the GDR, it is the year 1990. Yes, they come from Leipzig and the capital of the GDR, but also from Hoyerswerda and from Wismar, on their way to Rostock. Each of the four stands for their own city; when they need reinforcements, the others join in. The audience looks at each individual city and at the whole of Germany over the course of a year. - The four are actors; they include four historians. The academics and the artists research together; a multi-perspective play was created over the course of several months.
The people involved were of course also there in 1989. They experienced the mass protests, the state crisis, the beginning of a revolution, they intervened or simply observed. How does everything continue now - in 1990 - how does everything end? Was your own country, which finally showed itself to be new, as young as you were, suddenly old again? Are we left with only individual freedom and leave politics to those who will soon become "those up there"?
This is also how the artists talk about our time. With the time of then, by means of individual biographies that we follow through the year in which Germany became one and remains divided in its interpretation of history.
