“There were only two geniuses in Germany after the war: Fassbinder in the West and Schleef in the East,” said Elfriede Jelinek. When Einar Schleef died far too young in 2001 at the age of just 57, he was alone; it wasn’t until days later that the public learned of his death. How is it that this painter, author, and pioneer of German director’s theater—first in the East, then in the West, and finally in reunified Germany—remained an outsider everywhere, equally recognized and misunderstood, celebrated and suppressed, unerring and misjudged? The elliptically edited archival footage lets Schleef himself do the talking—erratically, stammering, and unsparingly. Sandra Prechtel carefully weaves together biographical highlights to create a portrait of a loner who was as defiant as he was vulnerable. The film explores theater, the mechanisms of repression in postwar society, and the reality of German-German relations.
