Following his international success with BACURAU (Jury Prize at Cannes 2019) and PICTURES OF GHOSTS (Brazil's 2024 Oscar entry), multi-award-winning Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho presents his latest feature film THE SECRET AGENT - an atmospherically dense political thriller set during the final years of Brazil's military dictatorship, which leads its characters into an opaque web of surveillance, corruption and familial alienation.

Brazil 1977: During the exuberant carnival week, Marcelo (Wagner Moura), a man in his mid-forties, returns from São Paulo to the coastal city of Recife. There he hopes to see his son again. But his arrival does not go unnoticed - between partying crowds and omnipresent violence, Marcelo finds himself caught up in an increasingly dense web of surveillance, corruption and mistrust from which there is no escape. What begins as a personal journey develops into a dangerous game in the shadow of the military dictatorship.

In 1977, a technology expert flees from a mysterious past and returns to his hometown of Recife in search of peace. He soon realizes that the city is far from being the refuge he seeks.
