On Dance as a Common Ground for Critical Practices
In the organizer's words:
On Dance as a Common Ground for Critical Practices
Panel Discussion with Felix Dompreh, Pascale “Baba” Altenburger, Nora Amin, and “H” Patten
Dance is a field of diverse artistic practices and physical experiences. But which dances and experiences take center stage when it comes to support, appreciation, and recognition? To which spaces and contexts are those dances and bodies relegated that are deemed unworthy of recognition? And how do those affected resist these prejudices? This panel discussion reflects on hierarchies within dance practice and explores how various sectors of the European dance landscape contribute to and perpetuate existing power asymmetries. Drawing on the experiences and work of BIPoC artists, the discussion explores notions of dance and decoloniality. Featuring choreographers and authors “H” Patten and Nora Amin, dance artist and educator Pascale “Baba” Altenburger, and Felix Dompreh, founder and artistic director of the KUYUM Dance Platform, the event brings together international artists who shed light on their respective dance practices. Their diverse approaches are united by the empowerment inherent in their work and the transmission of transcultural dance knowledge. They focus on perspectives shaped by racialized and marginalized dances, forms of knowledge, and traditions. The event begins with presentations by the speakers, followed by a moderated discussion and questions from the audience. The event concludes with dancing that builds on the practices discussed earlier. The audience is warmly invited to participate.
KUYUM Dance Platform 2026 is an annual festival that highlights African dance cultures and artists and serves as a space for exchange and self-reflection.
