Perperúna @ Roots & Sprouts Festival 2026
In the organizer's words:
Contemporary Folk Polyphony
Since its official founding in 2020, the five members of the Perperúna Ensemble—driven by their shared passion for Greek, Balkan, and Sephardic oral traditions—have focused on the research, preservation, reinterpretation, and transmission of female polyphonic singing, often incorporating performative elements.
With a collection of reinterpreted folk songs and their hidden stories, inspired by vanishing cultural heritage, they create a distinctive contemporary polyphonic sound and invite listeners into an immersive world of sonic diversity from the Balkans and the Mediterranean diaspora.
Perperúna’s interpretations are not traditionally static, but rather contemporary and playfully curious. They span a vibrant, cross-genre spectrum ranging from gentle, moving sounds to powerful, celebratory, and rousing songs.
Perperúna consists of:
Lorena Atrakzy (Israel/Palestine), Dimitra Kandia (Greece), Angel Monaco (Italy), Saraï O’gara (Spain), Johanna Schlottke (Germany).
