Some say that the best way to defend democracy is to expand the boundaries of what can be said and treat the AfD like any other party. Others say that the greatest danger to democracy lies precisely in such boundless tolerance. Michel Friedman, himself of Jewish descent, knows very well what crimes against humanity nationalist thinking can lead to. So what if Bertolt Brecht's phrase: "The womb from which this crept is still fertile" were to become topical again right now?
