The term "populist" is generally used to describe a basic political attitude that claims to represent the will of the people, while "the elites" rule over the people. The term is generally used pejoratively in discourse: the populist criminally reduces complexity by constructing a supposedly unified will of the people and deceives the population with overly simple solutions. Sahra Wagenknecht is one of those politicians who are regularly described as populist. For good reason, says Julia Reuschenbach, a political scientist at the Otto Suhr Institute in Berlin, who argues for proximity to the people without populism. What does the BSW chairwoman say in response? And what should we make of political scientist Chantal Mouffe's call for left-wing populism? Moderated by Wolfram Eilenberger
