Phoebe Jewitt / Helge Letonja & Of Curious Nature: Blackbird/ Acid-Bolero
In the organizer's words:
About the event:
Time pressure, perfectionism, the struggle for recognition. Of Curious Nature performs two new choreographies by Phoebe Jewitt and Helge Letonja exploring the frictions inherent in the accelerated pace of life.
Through her dynamic movement language, choreographer Phoebe Jewitt—who most recently garnered attention with her work *White Rabbit* at the Theater Luzern—
the human urge for recognition, influence, and advancement. In doing so, she draws parallels between the mechanisms of our modern society and the hierarchies and power games of a Baroque court. Movement becomes a language of desire in which body, will, and power become inextricably entangled.
Set to an original composition by Minouche Ninh Briot—who transforms Baroque forms into a contemporary, fast-paced soundscape—a fascinating, timeless landscape emerges, straddling the familiar and the alien. A world between bitter comedy and grotesque absurdity, in which the yearning for the heights appears both ridiculous and terrifying.
In his new production, Helge Letonja, together with the OCN company, explores the question of a new physical culture of time. He contrasts this with life under pressure and constant overload and examines the resulting imbalances in how bodies interact with one another.
Together with the dancers, Letonja explores the simultaneity of life’s various rhythms and weaves them into a combination rich in contrast. The choreography emerges from the interplay between the pulsating acid techno of modern club culture and Maurice Ravel’s famous *Boléro*, whose creeping crescendo—through the repetition of its musical motif—unfolds an irresistible pull.
Through the dance’s artistic interweaving with this music, the choreography highlights the radically reduced tempo and a primal dance energy that together depict the interplay of life’s forces. Between form and chaos, order and unfolding, overcoming, and the eternal return of human longings.
About the Choreographers

After earning her BA in Contemporary Dance from the Zurich University of the Arts, Jewitt spent six seasons as a dancer with TanzLuzern. Since 2025, she has dedicated herself to her choreographic work, developing her own productions for PITT Company as well as commissioned works for international companies and institutions. As artistic director of steptext dance project and the dance company Of Curious Nature,Helge Letonja has created more than 60 dance works presented worldwide, often realized through interdisciplinary and transcultural collaborations. Under his leadership, OCN has developed into a highly acclaimed ensemble in Germany and internationally, serving as a cultural ambassador for dance in Bremen. In addition to his role as OCN’s resident choreographer, Letonja invites internationally active choreographers to expand the ensemble’s repertoire with multifaceted artistic perspectives. With a keen sense of musicality, Letonja deepens the artistic forms of expression at Of Curious Nature through, among other things, somatic practice, in order to portray the complexity of contemporary human beings in society. His repertoire ranges from dynamic, powerful ensemble pieces to ethereal allegories. Of Curious Nature performs on Bremen’s stages and in public spaces and regularly tours major venues both domestically and internationally.
