Fela Kuti (1938-1997), brilliant musical visionary and activist against colonialism and Nigeria's military government. His lyrics and political album covers, mainly designed by the then very young artist and graphic designer Lemi Ghariokwu, questioned colonial thought patterns and developed the idea of a self-confident Pan-Africanism. Influenced by the US civil rights movement and the Black Panthers, Fela Kuti's music, lyrics and the provocative political imagery of his covers became a musical weapon that continues to influence numerous artists today. In her lecture at this year's Felasophisches Treffen, art and music journalist Maxi Broecking will present a selection of Fela Kuti's iconic album covers.
