Berlin, early 80s: Mark and Anna's marriage is in ruins. The quarrels that their son Bob is suffering from escalate all the more when Mark, a former secret service agent, finds out about Anna's affair with Heinrich. While Mark falls for Helen, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Anna, a private investigator he has hired follows Anna to an old apartment. There he discovers Anna's sinister secret. Told in fragments, "Possession" knows no rules. Andrzej Zulawski's film features boundary-pushing acting performances by Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill, an almost unbearable tension and omnipresent paranoia, Bruno Nuytten's unleashed camera and eruptions of violence - and all of this in close proximity to the Berlin Wall.
