Jewish life in Cologne was first mentioned in writing in the year 321. A great deal has happened in the city on the Rhine since then. As a child, Jacques Offenbach—the son of the cantor at the Cologne synagogue—played music at Neumarkt, and in 1824 and during subsequent carnival seasons, Simon Oppenheim played the role of Princess Venetia in the Rose Monday parade.
