INFO ❋ ❋

The sleep concert is a special concert form and an extraordinary musical experience where music is experienced while lying down for a whole night. Inspired by the Sleep Concerts of musician and sleep researcher Robert Rich, they are based on the realization that the state at the transition between sleep and wakefulness, known as hypnagogia, is extremely receptive to artistic experience. Here, sensory perceptions mingle with inner experience, thoughts flow in free association, vivid dream images arise and fade away again. Based on this, the sleep concert is not aimed at deep sleep, but at a dipping up and down on the edge of sleep, like a diver on the surface of a deep lake. The music is calm, slow and meditative, it fills the space and embraces the audience, it provides the acoustic stimulus that allows you to keep your balance on the edge of consciousness, to let yourself drift and fall completely into the experience, the moment, the music. Timeless, cathartic, challenging, deeply relaxing; sleep concerts are all of these things.

We have always found it a shame to simply part in the morning after such an intense experience and therefore want to round off the sleep concert experience for the first time by offering breakfast together. We want to create the opportunity to talk about the experience and emphasize the communal aspect of the event. From around 07:00 there will be a breakfast offer from the friendly catering of the Zughafen.

Kindly sponsored by the city of Erfurt.

❋ Tickets ❋

In order to enable as many people as possible to participate, regardless of their financial means, we offer price levels. You can decide for yourself which price is appropriate for you, regardless of any formal concessionary status.

❋ FAQ ❋

✦ What do people sleep on? On what they bring - unfortunately we can't provide sleeping materials, so please bring what you need yourself. Everything is allowed, from a sleeping mat to a double bed

✦ How loud is a sleep concert? A sleep concert is considerably quieter than other music events, both in terms of the sound system and the volume of the audience. The music starts slightly above conversational volume and gets quieter as the night progresses, then gets a little louder again in the morning.

✦ What happens at a sleep concert? That always depends a little on the people who attend. The focus is on listening and dreaming away, but there is also room for many other things: some bring drawing materials, others bring something to read or write. Quiet conversations are also possible, especially earlier in the evening or in the morning. The only important thing is to be mindful and considerate so that other guests are not disturbed during their personal experience.

✦ What is the timetable? You can arrive at your leisure from 20:00 and the concert starts at 21:00. In order to guarantee a certain safe space and also so that peace and quiet returns at some point, ADMISSION CLOSES at 21:00. This means that anyone who is not there by then will not be able to get in. The live music runs until around 06:00 in the morning, from around 07:00 there is a communal breakfast, and the whole thing ends at 09:00.

✦ What about food and drink? There will be a bar with the usual drinks, including beer and a selection of teas from a trust fund. Unfortunately, we can't offer food, so it might be a good idea to bring a small snack. Overall, guests are welcome to bring whatever they need to feel comfortable.

✦ What about snoring? Almost half of the German population snores at least occasionally, so there will most likely be at least one snoring person at the sleep concert. We invite you to understand this, as well as all other sounds you encounter that night, not as a disturbance but as part of the experience. If you are a heavy snorer, we ask you to decide for yourself what a considerate approach looks like and whether participation is appropriate.

NB: A Sleep Concert works differently from what you may be used to. Please take the time to read the following information carefully to ensure a pleasant experience for everybody involved.

INFO ❋

A Sleep Concert is a rather special experience indeed: the audience is lying down and spends the entire night at the concert venue, the music is slow, gentle and deep. Inspired by the musician and psychologist Robert Rich, the intention is to reach the state of Hypnagogia. This is the transition between wakefulness and sleep, during which the brain is highly receptive towards artistic experience. Consciousness and subconsciousness hang in the balance, sensory input is blended with dreamlike imagery, nonlinear thoughts and sometimes even hallucinations. It can allow deep insights as well as the expansion of awareness and consciousness. Through suitable music that is slow, often relaxing but at times challenging, the listener is gently guided in and out of sleep, thus reaching Hypnagogia repeatedly like a diver floating near the surface of a deep and calm lake. You will not necessarily have the best or deepest sleep of your life at a sleep concert, but certainly you will experience a night to remember.

We always found it a pity to simply go our separate ways after such an intense experience in the morning. That's why, for the first time, we want to round off the sleep concert experience with a communal breakfast. This will provide an opportunity to share thoughts about the experience and highlight the community aspect of the event. From 07:00 onwards the catering of Zughafen will provide a lovely breakfast for everybody willing to stay around.

Kindly funded by the city of Erfurt.

❋ Tickets ❋

To make attendance as affordable as possible, we are implementing a flexible admission fee. Between 13 and 28 € you can decide for yourself, how much you can and want to pay for the experience. We will not check any poof of student status, unemployment or the likes but instead trust that our guests will use this model responsibly.

FAQ ❋

As the sleep concert is quite the different experience from a usual music event, some specific considerations apply. Therefore, please take note of the following to ensure a pleasant experience for you and everybody else

✦ What do people sleep on? On whatever they bring with them - unfortunately, we cannot provide sleeping materials, so please bring whatever you need yourself. Anything from a sleeping mat to a double bed is allowed.

✦ How loud is a sleep concert? A sleep concert is considerably quieter than other music events, both in terms of the sound system and the audience noise level. The music starts slightly above conversation level and becomes progressively quieter throughout the night, and then a bit louder again in the early morning hours.

✦ What happens at a sleep concert? That partly depends on the people who attend. The main focus is on deep listening and achieving unique modes of consciousness, but there is also space for other activities: some bring drawing materials, others something to read or write. Quiet conversations are also possible, especially earlier in the evening or in the morning. The key is mindfulness and consideration, so as not to disturb other guests in their personal experience.

✦ What is the schedule? Doors open from 8:00 PM so you have some time to arrive and get comfortable. The concert starts at 9:00 PM at which time the DOORS CLOSE. This is to ensure a certain level of quiet and a feeling of security and means that if you are not there by 21:00, you will not be able to participate in the concert. The live music continues until around 6:00 AM, and from about 7:00 AM there is a communal breakfast. The event ends at 9:00 AM.

✦ What about food and drinks? There will be a bar with the usual drinks, including beer and a selection of teas available for a donation. Unfortunately, we cannot provide food, so it might be a good idea to bring a small snack. In general, guests are welcome to bring whatever they need to feel comfortable.

✦ What about snoring? Almost half of the German population snores at least occasionally, so there is likely to be at least one person snoring at the sleep concert. We invite you to perceive this, like all other sounds you encounter that night, not as a disturbance but as part of the experience. If you are a heavy snorer, we ask you to consider carefully how to handle this responsibly and whether attending is appropriate.
