In the early 1970s, a handful of people discovered the idyllic beaches of Goa. They were dropouts from the commercialized world who proudly called themselves "hippie freaks" and still spend every winter there today.
In this film, shot at original locations in Goa, long-time friends and contemporary witnesses portray a world of new beginnings, a world full of freedom, lust and spirituality. Everyday life in their Goa paradise was characterized not only by hardship, but also by a certain madness. What was life like without electricity, without running water, without law and order? Many could not cope with the new freedom in Goa, took the hardest drugs, went to prison or died. Those who survived these times often devoted themselves to very imaginative and artistic pursuits; many of them still work today as musicians, filmmakers, actors or designers.
Locals, on the other hand, tell the story from their point of view, sometimes giving bizarre insights into the wild life of the hippies, which had nothing to do with theirs and which they nevertheless accepted in a friendly manner. In the meantime, especially since the beginning of the pandemic, the scene has changed fundamentally and the circle of friends of the legendary 'hippie freaks' is getting smaller and smaller due to their age. But their memories, combined with the atmospheric pictures taken on location, bring the special spirit of Goa back to life.
SILVER HAIR STILL ROCKS won three awards at international film festivals in India and Bangladesh in 2022 and was a finalist in the competition for the Granit documentary film prize at the 56th Hof Film Festival 2022. It was also a semi-finalist at the Dumbo Film Festival 2023 in New York and a finalist at the Cannes Film Awards 2024.
