Somi Kakoma - the Grammy-nominated singer, composer, playwright and Broadway actress known in the jazz world simply as Somi - was born in Illinois to parents who emigrated from Rwanda and Uganda. She discovered her musical identity by crossing the cultural bridge between Africa and America. Closely mentored by legendary trumpeter Hugh Masekela, Somi carved her own path as an artist, scholar and activist. After an exciting period of new creative heights in the theater world, her forthcoming album is a long-awaited return to her roots as a singer-songwriter. Written in Lagos, Dakar, Paris and New York, Somi offers an Afropolitan sonic travel diary that weaves deeply personal narratives with modern jazz and African groove.
