When you grow up in the "Cidade de Deus", the CITY OF GOD, one of Rio de Janeiro's favelas, your childhood ends early. What gang games are elsewhere, gang warfare with real weapons is here. This is where the ruthless Dadinho (Leandro Firmino da Hora) and the shy Buscapé (Alexandre Rodrigues) grow up. Dadinho relies on cocaine trafficking, violence and robberies to survive. Buscapé, on the other hand, dreams of becoming a photographer. After twenty years, both have achieved their goal. Buscapé is a successful photographer. Dadinho is Zé Pequeno, Rio's most feared drug dealer. In the CITY OF GOD, his word is law.... until Mane Galinha (Seu Jorge) turns up. Mane witnesses the rape of his girlfriend and decides to kill Zé in revenge. Overnight, he gathers an army of armed children around him who all want the same thing: Zé's death. War breaks out in the CITY OF GOD, where director Fernando Meirelles tells the story of poverty and drugs, ambition and violence from the perspective of those who experience it on a daily basis in a breathless and gripping way. The film CITY OF GOD, based on the novel "Cidade de Deus" by Paulo Lins, has already caused a sensation from day one and represents Brazil in this year's selection for the Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film and has been celebrated by audiences and the press at festivals around the world (including Cannes and Toronto).
