The music trail runs for five kilometers along the Spree through various urban zones of the Charlottenburg district. It passes residential areas, parks, allotments, industry and the lock.
Eleven international composers were invited to compose new works for special places along Berlin's largest water artery - as a response to the respective geographical location and urban environment as well as in resonance with local and global water and multispecies knowledge. The "Spreeklänge" create immersive sound spaces and at the same time take up critical reflections such as questions about the spiritual significance of water in indigenous communities and the rights and dignity of rivers and non-human beings. The acoustic space is spanned from Philippine stalactite caves to water sounds that can only be perceived tactilely to encounters with diverse bat species on the Rotten Spree. Utopias are staged with singers on rowing boats, field names are recited and a sound forest is played by schoolchildren.
The performances take place around the river: on the riverside path, on boats on the water or on the other side of the river, under bridges or on open spaces. The individual compositions relate to the respective location, changing it and thus its perception. They are interventions in the everyday, normal use of public space.
Each work has its own specific format. From small concerts, music-theatrical interventions and installations, also involving communities and groups of schoolchildren, a multifaceted contemporary sound panorama is created for a mobile audience that can move individually from situation to situation with open senses and listen to the sounds, the flow and the living beings.

The music trail runs mainly along unpaved paths, some with a gravel surface. At some bridge crossings there are also narrow passages and inclines that are not fully wheelchair accessible. The route is therefore only partially suitable for people with limited mobility. Under certain circumstances, it may be possible to participate with a companion and an all-terrain outdoor wheelchair. The total length of the route is around 5-6 km.
Unfortunately, there are currently no special support services available for people with hearing or visual impairments. Nevertheless, the trail can provide interesting and enriching experiences, provided the route can be managed.
We believe that people with cognitive impairments can enjoy the music trail.
