"I want my music to sound like Ray Charles interpreting songs by the Arctic Monkeys," Jan himself sums it up, naming the blues and indie rock icons as just two of his many influences: His socialization with 90s Britpop, the melodious aesthetics of the Beatles and pulsating hip-hop percussiveness are unmistakable in every song. A combination that secured him the 1Live preliminary round win at the New Music Award in 2012. In terms of songwriting, the Wuppertal native focuses on catchiness and authenticity.

In his lyrics, the 40-year-old looks his own inner demons in the eye regardless of the consequences: from autobiographical confrontations with depression to self-reflective soul stripteases about the escapist allure of self-destruction, Jan doesn't make a murder pit out of his soul and inspires others to do the same with this ruthlessness.

Because in the end, despite everything, there is a hopeful, optimistic outlook - carried by his characteristic and versatile voice, which has an enormous recognition value with its raw, British groove, but also serves the soft forms of falsetto alongside a snotty punk feeling. One minute Jan may be singing bittersweet love songs full of soft nuances, the next he's spitting venom and bile and then immediately after that he's delivering flawless raps on stage, accompanied only by his guitar and occasionally the audience itself. A voice and an artist whose emotional rollercoaster rides and the devotion he sings about can be felt at every second.
