NetzWERKE: Monuments & Infrastructure
The museum building, constructed between 1891 and 1896, was designed by building inspectors Heinrich Flügel and Ludwig Beermann. Even under its first director, Hugo Schauinsland, the collections grew rapidly, prompting the addition of a second atrium to the building between 1907 and 1911.
With its collection—a unique combination of ethnology, natural history, and commercial history in Europe—the Übersee-Museum is a special place for sharing knowledge. The exhibitions explore the diversity of life in culture, nature, and trade.
