Against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the burgeoning women's rights movement, a man plans a daring art heist. In his risky venture, he must assert himself in a world characterized by social and political upheaval.
Kelly Reichardt's latest film, The Mastermind, is a story about art and crime set in a
crime set in a Massachusetts suburb in 1970. The movie transforms the classic heist movie into a quiet study of one man's choices and their unforeseen consequences. Josh O'Connor plays James Blaine Mooney, an unemployed carpenter who has not yet lived up to the expectations of his middle-class background and tries to keep his head above water with petty art thefts. In order to get money quickly, he plans his first big coup with a motley gang: a daring robbery in broad daylight at a small local art museum to steal some abstract paintings by the American artist Arthur Dove. But the whole thing goes badly wrong and Mooney's world is turned upside down.
