Theater TIER: Mein Opa auf den Marshallinseln
In the organizer's words:
The Wondrous World of German Family Narratives
In addition to childhood memories, puppeteer Vanessa Valk inherited two photo albums and a diary from her grandfather that document his journey to the Marshall Islands in 1911. In family stories, Grandpa was regarded as a “hero.” He stayed there for three years until the patriot left a “South Sea woman” behind on the islands and returned to go to war for his homeland. From today’s perspective, how do we tell the story of a die-hard colonialist whose heroic anecdotes in the family tradition masked his later Nazi sympathies? Who decides, in the first place, which stories are told within a family and which are swept under the rug?
Note: Following the event on Sat, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m., there will be a free post-performance discussion. On Sun, Oct. 25, join Theater TIER on a journey into your own family photo (Registration required! Tickets also available at rausgegangen.de).
