Vasil Berela: Paradise Belongs to You

With *Paradise Belongs to You*, FAK26 presents a solo exhibition by Berlin-based artist Vasil Berela (*1986*). With his large-scale installation *Monsieur Grat’s Dream*, Berela—drawing on his own experiences as a refugee from Georgia—creates a space in which existential questions and the vulnerability of the body take center stage. What do traumas mean for perception, memory, and identity, and how do life-threatening events shift one’s relationship to one’s own body and to the world? The eponymous work *Paradise belongs to you* brings these questions to a head and, in this context, addresses every living being’s right to dignity. In his works, Berela repeatedly plays with the perception of what appears real and what may be an illusion or a dream. The painting *In case of e(me)rgency* also bears witness to this imitation of the real— . In the style of trompe-l’œil, the work presents itself as something it is not. Berela explores this state between illusion and reality through sculpture, painting, and video.
