»Verräterkinder. Die Töchter und Söhne des Widerstands« – Film-Matinée

A documentary film by Christian Weisenborn.

The children of those who fought against National Socialism and were executed in Plötzensee were regarded as “children of traitors” in the Federal Republic of Germany well into the 1970s. Director Christian Weisenborn, whose parents were themselves active in the “Red Orchestra,” spoke with some of these children. They spoke of their grief over the early loss of their mothers and fathers, and of the difficulties of growing up at a time when their parents’ heroic deeds were either defamed or, as in the GDR, exploited for political ends.

Following the 45-minute film, there will be a discussion with Dr. Axel Smend, one of the film’s protagonists, whose father, General Staff Officer Günther Smend, was executed in Plötzensee on September 8, 1944. From 2003 to 2020, he served as chairman of the board and chairman of the board of trustees of the July 20, 1944 Foundation in Berlin.
