When I think of Brazil at night,

..., the first thing that comes to mind are the recent headlines about the conviction of ex-President Bolsonaro. 27 years, more than a quarter of a century in prison*, because after his term in office he tried to prevent the hopeful course of the new government of Lula da Silva with the help of the military.

Brazil is one of the countries that has long been criticized for clearing the Amazon region to make it suitable for livestock farming. Yet the country with its many natural treasures of flora and fauna is a paradise, but one that threatens to disappear if overexploitation continues. Bolsonaro has contributed to this distopic downfall. It is good that he and some of his fellow campaigners are under control for the time being.

The band LUAH show us that Brazil can still be a source of inspiration and that the image of the lifestyle once characterized by the Copa Cabana continues to pulsate, and is not only nourished by the legendary Pelé and the "Girl from Ipanema".

With authentic melodies, smooth arrangements, Afro-Brazilian rhythms and songs that deal with a variety of moods between joyful celebração and longing saudade, their music pampers our ears. Elsa Johanna Mohr, Vocals / Ukulele / Western Guitar / Percussion, founded this trio together with Lena-Larissa Senge, Vocals / Syntheziser / Chimes / Percussion and Ula Martyn-Ellis, E-Guitar / Vocals/ Mandolin. The Brazilian percussion instruments caxixi, shaker and pandeiro are their rhythmic partners. It comes as no surprise that they won the German Jazz Award 2023 in the "VOCAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR" category. It is music that gives hope that a Brazil with a new course will seize its opportunities to remain a paradise.

*I've just read that 40,000 Brazilians are taking to the streets to protest against Bolsonaro's attempted amnesty. Among them are the musicians Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque and Gilberto Gil. Musicians who have also understood how important it is to protect this country.
