Vortrag Marina Sassenberg, Was haben Stolpersteine mit Demokratie zu tun? Deutsch-jüdische Geschichte, Erinnerungskultur und gesellschaftlicher Auftrag

In the organizer's words:
Most people would probably answer spontaneously: Stolpersteine are an integral part of German remembrance culture. But what exactly is democratic about this commemoration of the victims of National Socialism embedded in the pavement? Why is it as successful as it is controversial? What are its strengths and weaknesses and why are Stolpersteine meaningless without historical education about German-Jewish democratic history? The lecture outlines an ongoing debate and builds a bridge between historical significance and current action.
Dipl. Soz. Wiss. Dr. Marina Sassenberg is a freelance historian born in Duisburg in 1958. She studied social sciences and history and was a research assistant at the Salomon Ludwig Steinheim Institute and the Moses Mendelssohn Academy. In 2003, she received her doctorate in Modern and Contemporary History from the University of Halle-Wittenberg. Her publications deal with German-Jewish and European-Jewish history. She worked on the encyclopedia "Democratic Paths" and was an exhibition curator at the Jewish Museum in Dorsten.
