Max Liebermann and Edmund Edel were friends for half their lives. In the 1890s, they both showed their paintings at exhibitions organized by the Vereinigung der XI, the forerunner of the Berlin Secession. In the 1930s, they exchanged views on the disastrous political developments at the hands of the National Socialists, of which they were both victims as Jewish artists. While Liebermann rose to become one of the leading representatives of the fine arts, Edel turned away from painting, became a leading innovator of poster art in Germany, drew caricatures, wrote satires and novels and worked as a screenwriter and director for the fledgling film industry.
At this benefit evening, we invite you to rediscover the multi-talented artist Edmund Edel. Actor Hans-Jürgen Schatz will bring Edel's witty texts to life, while literary and cultural scholar Dr. Björn Weyand will provide biographical and anecdotal information. Before the event begins, you are cordially invited to take part in a guided tour of the house and garden. By attending the benefit evening, you will be supporting the "Ground Floor Project", which aims to redesign the first floor of the Liebermann Villa.
