In the organizer's words:

The bike tour to the Echinger Gfild takes us to the valuable nature reserves of Garchinger Heide, Mallertshofer Holz, and Echinger Lohe. Biologist and area manager Tobias Maier explains how these areas have developed and changed over time under human influence. He will also introduce plants and animals that are typical of these habitats. The heathlands north of Munich are part of a cultural landscape with a centuries-old tradition. Since the barren soils were unsuitable for crop farming, they were grazed by sheep, which kept the landscape open. This has created valuable habitats for plants and animals that benefit from this form of extensive land management. In contrast to intensive agricultural use, this results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions—which drive climate change—and lower water consumption. At the same time, high biodiversity promotes the stability of ecosystems, which in turn contributes to climate protection. As part of the bike tour, we’ll also explore this topic at a few sample sites.
