A sealed envelope on stage, no rehearsals, zero prior knowledge: Theater Colonia presents Nassim Soleimanpour’s globally acclaimed theatrical experiment “White Rabbit, Red Rabbit” in Cologne. Ten artists take on this radical self-experiment, which international stars such as Sandra Hüller, Whoopi Goldberg, and Christoph Maria Herbst have already dared to attempt.

What makes it special: Once an actor has performed the play, they know the content and are therefore never allowed to perform it again. Thus, every performance becomes an irreplaceable premiere, in which both the performers and the audience discover the text for the first time together.

A play that travels the world through its performers 

Iranian author Nassim Soleimanpour wrote the play in 2011 while in isolation. As a conscientious objector, his passport was revoked, and he was not allowed to leave his country. His response was a text that could travel in his stead—a play that explicitly functions without his presence and without a director, and that enters into a dialogue with the audience. Since then, it has been performed over 3,000 times in 50 countries and is considered the most frequently performed theatrical experiment.
