Pop music didn’t just begin with Elvis. The three-minute song has its origins in the temporal limitations of the shellac record, which not only preserved sounds, but above all, made them transportable – massively boosting their popularisation. Those present could now listen to the absent, the dead sing for the living. And musical knowledge was no longer exclusively transmitted from musician to musician through direct contact, but could now be disseminated amorphously across time and space. Pop 16 looks at the beginnings of pop music between 1910 and 1930. In West Africa there was Palm Wine, in Eastern Europe Sevda. In Indonesia one listened to Krontjong, in Greece Rembetiko. In New Orleans Hot Jazz blossomed, in New York Broadway, in Rio de Janeiro one sang Sambas and played Choro. The theme days present new interpretations, transformations and unheard combinations of the styles from back then, bringing them to life in the present. Pop 16 takes place as part of the HKW series 100 Years of Now.
