Gondwana Records is a multi-genre independent record label based in Manchester, UK whose output spans modern-widescreen-minimalism, electronica, jazz, classical and beyond. The label was founded in 2008 by trumpeter and producer Matthew Halsall and celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this October. Gretchen is one of our favourite venues and regularly hosts Gondwana artists including Portico Quartet, Matthew Halsall and Jasmine Myra. We are delighted to welcome you to this very concert featuring Svaneborg Kardyb, Vega Trails and Hanakiv.
Svaneborg Kardyb are a multi award winning duo from Denmark. Their beautiful music draws on Danish folk music and Scandinavian jazz influences, including Nils Frahm, Esbjörn Svennson and Jan Johansson’s landmark recording Jazz På Svenska, and is marked by an exquisite and joyful melding of beautiful melodies, delicate minimalism, catchy grooves, subtle electronica vibes, Nordic atmospheres and organic interplay, all underwritten by the sheer joy of playing together.
Vega Trails is a new project from double-bassist and composer Milo Fitzpatrick, a founder member of Portico Quartet and features saxophonist Jordan Smart (Mammal Hands, Sunda Arc) in a richly powerful duo bringing together two powerfully charismatic musicians. The project was born out of a desire to bring the elements of bass and melody to the foreground in their rawest form.
Hanakiv is a young composer and musician from Estonia (now based in London) who creates meditative piano-based ambient music with elements from classical and electronic music, drawing on influences as diverse as Tim Hecker, Kara-Lis Coverdale, Arvo Pärt, and Aphex Twin as well as her own cultural heritage.
