An Invitation to Disappear (Julian Charrière & Inland)

Performance & Album Release Party Line-up: Inland LIVE | Efdemin | Rhyw | Magna Pia On September 26, 2018 Berghain will host "An Invitation To Disappear", an audio-visual excursion into the both dystopian and paradisiacal landscape of palm oil plantation toward a totemic soundsystem on full blast. Shot and conceived by visual artist Julian Charrière and soundtracked by Inland, the event will serve as the release party for an accompanying album, featuring a special edition booklet and eight tracks of spectral techno and rhythmically intricate electronics by Inland. The LP will be released via A-TON, a sublabel of Berghain’s in house imprint Ostgut Ton. Following the performance will be a release party, featuring DJ sets by Efdemin, Rhyw and Magna Pia. In the 76-minute performance, on a journey from dusk to dawn, light flickers between rows of fruit-laden canopies. A distant fire burns in the undergrowth where the face and sounds of a synthetic jungle emerge, oscillating between natural and artificial. Juxtaposing industrial agriculture with rave culture, the project explores the industrialization and refinement of nature, and the new strange forms emerging from the synthetic. The project in both its audiovisual and LP forms was created in response to the 200th anniversary of the eruption of Indonesia’s Tambora volcano in 1815, which plunged the world into a mysterious darkness and a series of extreme weather conditions. This natural climate crisis resulted in famines and political upheaval and is known throughout the northern hemisphere as “The Year Without Summer”. Its consequences offered a view of a world where global communities must adapt to sudden radical changes in temperature and weather. Parallels can be drawn to contemporary society confronted with anthropogenic climate change, which may one day result in its own "Year Without a Winter.” This event is brought to you by A-TON, Berghain and Berlinische Galerie. The latter will host Charrière’s solo exhibition As We Used to Float, also opening September 26, 2018.
