Art and climate: Museums’ challenges and purposes in a warming world (English)

What’s it about?

In a context of accelerating climate disruption, what is at stake for museums around the globe, and what should be their role as institutions of preservation but also as agents of change?

This lecture will examine museums’ strategies to meaningfully reduce their ecological footprint by rethinking their missions, operations, and cultural programming. We will also study how museums should adapt to climate change, in order to become more resilient on the long term.

Finally we will delve into how, through their collections, museums can enrich the collective thinking about environmental issues. By providing knowledge, nuance, beauty and imagination, how can they help society (re)invent a sustainable future?

Who is our guest?

Clémence Gros is Corporate social responsibility advisor for the general director of quai Branly museum, in Paris. She is in charge of developing and implementing the museum’s environmental policy, in constant cooperation with all the departments. Before taking up this mission in 2022, she worked in the museum’s publics department to develop the accessibility policy for visitors with disability and the off-site partnerships for publics with special needs.
