Endlich! Das Trio um den finnischen Bassisten Jonathan Bäckström spielt nun ein Jahr nach dem ersten vereinbarten Konzert, das Corona zum Opfer fiel, endlich in der Jazz am Helmholtzplatz Reihe im Kühlspot Social Club. Der Kontakt zu Jonathan Bäckström entstand über die Verbindung zu einem brasilianischen Drummer, Alex Duarte, der im Mai wieder Berlin und "Jazz am Helmholtzplatz " besucht und mehrere Konzerte in der Reihe "Brazil&Jazz" bestreiten wird. Er wird regelmäßig von Finnland eingeladen, um dort Schlagzeugkurse zu geben. Jonathan Bäckström spielt am 23.3. mit Joel Holmes (piano) und Alessandro D'Anna (drums). Joel Holmes ist ein amerikanischer Jazzpianist, der schon länger in Berlin lebt und dessen Konzerte das Publikum in Staunen und Begeisterung versetzen. Alessandro D'Anna kommt aus Rom, hat neben Musik auch Literatur studiert und bereits auf etlichen internationalen Festivals gespielt. Es gibt also am 23.3. ein modern-kreatives nordisch-amerikanisches-italienisches Crossover zu hören, auf das wir sehr gespannt sind.

BRD! is a new group by Finnish bassist Jonathan Bäckström and Italian drummer Alessandro D’Anna. They are joined by pianist and composer Joel Holmes.
The trio explores improvisation with an eclectic mindset, constantly pushing the music with a forward-thinking perspective. The repertoire consists of original compositions as well as arrangements of Black American Music.

Jonathan Bäckström Bassist Jonathan Bäckström was born in Kruunupyy, Finland 1995. He graduated from Novia UAS in Jakobstad. He moved to Helsinki in 2019 and is since then an in demand freelance musician, composer and educator. He has performed with both national and international renowned artists such as Anders Mogensen (DK), Raoul Björkenheim, Gianni Gagliardi (ES), Carl Winther (DK), Riitta Paakki, Erkki-Sven Tüür (EE), Kaj Chydenius, Mathias Sandberg, Alex Duarte (BR), Benjamin Facconier (FR) and many others. In 2022 he will record his debut album with Jonathan Bäckström Quartet, a project that plays Jonathans compositions. Jonathan is also the creative director of Collision art collective, which is a collective of four artists that organize the yearly festival “Collision festival” in Jakobstad, Finland.
Alessandro D’Anna Jazz drummer, born in 1992. Studied drums with Victor Lewis, Gregory Hutchinson, Jeff Ballard, Mark Guiliana, Gianni Di Renzo, John Wooton, and Fabrizio Sferra. Graduated from Tre University of Rome in modern literature and graduated from Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Rome in Classical Composition & Didactic of Music (master’s degree).
From his arrival on the national scene in 2012, Alessandro made music that grew from an uncanny talent to hear the future and a headstrong desire to play it. At his young age, he already collects many important collaborations with international jazz musicians all around the world as David Kikoski, Benito Gonzalez, Essiet Okon Essiet, Mark Gross, Freddie Hendrix, Janusz Muniak, John Taylor, Eve Cornelious, Gregory Boyd, Abraham Burton, Rick Germanson, Bruce Barth, Jon Davis, Antoine Drye, Benny Benack III, Reinier Baas, Rotem Sivan, Alexi Tuomarila, Carlo Conti, Maurizio Giammarco, Ares Tavolazzi, Fabio Zeppetella, Fabrizio Bosso, Andrea Rea, Daniele Sorrentino, Roberto Tarenzi, Rodolfo Maltese and many others.

Was teaching jazz drums as a Traineeship program at Metropolia University of Applied Science and World Music School in Helsinki.
Joel Holmes began teaching himself tunes by ear at age 10. He grew up playing with local bands and primarily in church. His family soon moved from Virginia to Baltimore so that he could attend the Baltimore School for the Performing Arts. Later, Joel Holmes became the Director of Jazz at his alma mater. He attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music at John Hopkins University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Performance.
Over the years, Joel has received numerous honors including 2 Grammy Nominations, a gold medal in the Act-so competition of the NAACP, and honorable mention in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, a finalist in the fifth annual Independent Music Awards and an honorable mention in the VH1 Song of the Year Awards.
Over the last several years, Joel has toured the world with Grammy winning jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove, vocalist Nnenna Freelon and Saxophonist Javon Jackson who is an ex jazz Messenger with Art Blakey. Joel Holmes has performed all over the world solo,duos and with his trios touring Italy, France, Taiwan, Japan,Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Greece, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Holland, England, Spain, Chile,Ecuador, Uruguay, Canada, USA,Colombia, etc.
