BANTU - Afrobeat/Afrofunk sounds from Lagos

BANTU

Founded in 1996, BANTU have been one of the few African diaspora acts transforming the legacy of King Sunny Adé and Fela Kutiinto the soundtrack of the global African movement. The group is distinguished by the fact that while created and fronted by vocalist Ade Bantu, it is unmistakably a collective, collaborative effort. When you have a band this strong, this tight where everyone gets to shine, magic happens. And once again with their new album, the 13-piece ensemble is pushing the boundaries of funkiness and political prowess for contemporary music, in Africa or globally. From their first release to the present, BANTU has scored a series of hits across Europe and Africa garnering major awards. Indeed, the list of artists who've collaborated with BANTU is a testament to the power, originality and talent of the band: an international cornucopia including UB40, Tony Allen, Patrice, Nneka, Orlando Julius, Brothers Keepers (which they created), Gentleman, Yemi Alade, Megaloh and Burna Boy just to name a few. These collaborations helped the band earn several major Continental awards, including the Kora Awards (the Pan African equivalent of the Grammys) for “Best Group West Africa” and “Best Group Africa”. BANTUhave been credited with the recent revival of the live music scene in Nigeria through Afropolitan Vibes, a monthlyconcert series & music festival that they have been hosting for over 9years in Lagos. The show has featured over 200 top Nigerian and international acts and was voted as“one of the world's best music events of the moment" byTheVillage Voice. Theirrelease“Everybody Get Agenda"(2020)wasnothing short of a musical sensation -Afrobeat, Afrofunk and Soul seamlessly flowedinto one another as they mergedwith Jazz, Highlife, Hiphop and Yoruba music. Thelyricson the albumaddressedissues around corruption, injustice, migration, xenophobia and urban alienationwhile a guest appearance by Seun Kuti on “Yeye Theory” roundedup thesolid long player which was produced and recorded by Aman Junaid (George Clinton, TLC) in Lagos, mixed byManu Schlindwein (Angelique Kidjo, Patrice) in Cologne and mastered Tony Dawsey (Jay Z,NIN, Gang Starr) in Atlanta.
The critical response to BANTU’s Everybody Get Agendawasoverwhelmingly favourable, German magazine Stern called it “aworld music masterpiece” while France’s Le Monde newspaper praised the band for “walking in the footsteps of the"king"of Afrobeat, “whose spirit they perpetuate, both in substance and in form”. With top 5 chart entries upon its release on both the European World Music Charts and the Transglobal Music Charts it is clear that BANTU did not justchart new musical territory but reached it and planted their flag.Currently the band is working on a newalbumwhich is slated for release in June 2023. Their first single “WayoAnd Division will drop on 24.03.23.
