BLACK IN BERLIN

Für den Fotografen Yero Adugna Eticha begann alles mit den Protesten gegen die Morde an Breonna Taylor und George Floyd und der daraus erstarkten Black Lives Matter-Bewegung im Jahr 2020. Weltweit kam es zu Demonstrationen gegen Rassismus und Diskriminierung sowie Solidaritätsbekundungen. Eticha beschließt aktiv zu werden. In den Straßen Berlins verteilt er Flugblätter an Schwarze Menschen mit dem Aufruf, sich von ihm fotografieren zu lassen. Im Laufe der Jahre entstanden so 500 Porträts von Afro-Schwarzen Deutschen und der Diaspora in Berlin. In den Begegnungen erfuhr er alltägliche und bewegende Details aus ihrem Leben, die er aufzeichnete. Dabei arbeitet Eticha transdisziplinär auf den Ebenen von Bild und Ton. Mit BLACK IN BERLIN ist ein einzigartiges Archiv entstanden, das einen Einblick in die facettenreichen Lebenswirklichkeiten Schwarzer Menschen in einer weißen Mehrheitgesellschaft gibt.

Im Mittelpunkt der Porträtarbeit steht Etichas Auseinandersetzung mit der Kultur und Geschichte des Kolonialismus: „Wer wir sind: Ein fester Bestandteil dieser Stadt, Menschen unterschiedlicher Professionen und Hintergründe, verschiedener Träume, Verkörperungen Schwarzer Identität. Ich träume von einem Berlin, in dem die Facette eines jeden Schwarzen Gesichts gefeiert wird.“ – Yero Adugna Eticha

BLACK IN BERLIN ist die erste Einzelausstellung des gebürtigen Äthiopiers Yero Adugna Eticha, der als Fotograf in Berlin lebt und arbeitet. Parallel erscheint das Buch BLACK IN BERLIN im Distanz Verlag.

For photographer Yero Adugna Eticha, it all began with the protests against the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd and the resulting strengthening of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. Demonstrations against racism and discrimination and expressions of solidarity took place around the world. Eticha decides to take action. On the streets of Berlin, he distributed flyers to Black people asking them to be photographed by him. Over the years, he took 500 portraits of Afro-Black Germans and the diaspora in Berlin. During these encounters, he learned everyday and moving details of their lives, which he recorded. Eticha works transdisciplinary on the levels of image and sound. BLACK IN BERLIN is a unique archive that provides an insight into the multifaceted realities of Black people’s lives in a white majority society.

At the center of the portrait work is Eticha’s examination of the culture and history of colonialism: “Who we are: An integral part of this city, people of different professions and backgrounds, different dreams, embodiments of Black identity. BLACK IN BERLIN is the first solo exhibition by Ethiopian-born photographer Yero Adugna Eticha, who lives and works in Berlin. The book BLACK IN BERLIN will be published in parallel by Distanz Verlag.
