Concert: 10 Years of BRUTALISM
From staging concerts in brutalist buildings -most notably Cologne’s St. Gertrud Church—to developing new technical setups such as spatial audio and collaborating with international artists, Brutalism’s work explores the interplay between sound and space.
At the heart of their practice is the understanding of brutalist architecture not merely as a backdrop, but as an active agent within our events. Through this approach, Brutalism have established a format that bridges pop and club culture, experimental music and theoretical reflection, opening up new connections and engaging diverse audiences.
Mohammad Reza Mortazavi (b. 1979, Iran) is known for his groundbreaking work with the tombak and daf, traditional Persian drums that he has radically redefined through new playing techniques and extended vocabulary. Mortazavi began playing the tombak at the age of six. By nine, he had already outpaced his teacher and won Iran’s national tombak competition—a distinction he would earn six more times. His new album Nexus evokes a meeting point where energies, times, and spaces converge. Mortazavi has performed at major venues such as the Berlin Philharmonie, Paris Panthéon, and Sydney Opera House, and his rhythmic explorations have led to collaborations with experimental electronic artists including Burnt Friedman and Mark Fell. Reza has just released Ricardo Villalobos Variation of his track Swamp
